A Legacy of Care Since 1979

Our Story

Villa Scalabrini Retirement Center opened its doors to residents on July 16, 1979, with a clear mission to provide seniors with a warm, supportive, and dignified place to call home.

Just months earlier, on April 22, 1979, the community was formally dedicated in a ceremony attended by Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, Cardinal Timothy Manning, and more than 2,000 guests, marking the beginning of a lasting legacy of care.

The Vision Behind Villa Scalabrini

Villa Scalabrini was the vision of Father Luigi Donanzan of the Scalabrini Fathers of St. Charles, a missionary order dedicated to serving migrants and communities in need.

His belief was simple but powerful:

Seniors deserve to spend their later years in peaceful surroundings, engaged in meaningful activities, and supported by a caring community.

This vision quickly gained strong support from Cardinal Timothy Manning and the Italian American community, who came together to help bring the project to life.

Designed for Community and Comfort

Located in Sun Valley at the foothills of the Verdugo Mountains, Villa Scalabrini was thoughtfully designed to balance privacy with connection.

The 100,000 square foot, single story building is centered around seven interior gardens named after Italian cities:

Palermo, Napoli, Roma, Firenze, Venezia, Milano, Torino

These gardens create peaceful outdoor spaces while keeping all residents connected to the heart of the community.

Italian Heritage and Design

The design of Villa Scalabrini reflects its Italian roots.

Furniture, chandeliers, and decorative elements were imported from Italy, creating an environment that feels both elegant and welcoming. The marble entrance and shared spaces were crafted to reflect warmth, tradition, and quality.

Community Support and Legacy

Villa Scalabrini was made possible through the generosity of community leaders and donors who believed in its mission.

Notable supporters include:

Henry Salvatori, Jimmy Durante, Michael Monteleone, Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra helped raise funds through major events, including a tribute to his mother, Dolly Sinatra, who was a passionate supporter of the community.

Today, her legacy lives on, with the chapel dedicated in her memory.
